Happy birthday to Richard Avedon, who was born on this day in 1923.
A defining fashion photographer, Avedon is most widely recognized for his photographic series, “In the American West,” a project dedicated to the portraiture of working class in the west. The project lasted five years with over 762 people photographed – a huge catalog of images that helped to define American Western culture.
Avedon’s works is included in numerous collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
